Tarren Andrews (Yale): Critical Reading Methods in Indigenous Literatures

ER&M 3046 / ENGL 2846, Program in Ethnicity, Race, and Migration, Yale University, Fall 2026

The core assignment of this seminar is a weekly reading journal. Each week students set up a different reading environment and describe it in a page: whose land they are on and who built the place, then its temperature, colors, textures, smells and sounds, and their own bodily state. In a second page they analyze how that environment shaped their engagement with the week's reading. The course treats reading as a situated, embodied practice, and a reading-environment bingo board pushes students to vary where they read; one week's reading is done in the Beinecke Library.
